LG V30S ThinQ official with added RAM and storage, AI camera features
[ad_1]

As expected, LG has taken the wraps off of a new LG V30 variant at MWC 2018.

The LG V30S ThinQ is now official, and yes, it looks pretty much just like the LG V30 that launched last year. There are a few changes with the LG V30S ThinQ that are worth making note of, though.

With the V30S ThinQ, LG has upped the RAM from 4GB on the standard V30 to 6GB on the V30S ThinQ. The storage has been upgraded, too, going from 64GB on the V30 to 256GB on the V30S ThinQ.

The upgrades that LG is more likely to talk about have to do with the camera. Specifically, LG has given the V30S ThinQ some camera AI smarts. The AI Cam uses machine learning to recognize what you’re pointing your camera at and show keywords on screen, which you can then use to make sure that the camera’s settings are appropriate for what you’re shooting in order to get you a better image.

LG V30S ThinQ official Platinum Gray

Also included with the LG V30S ThinQ is a Bright Mode that’ll combine four pixels into one to give you a brighter photo when you’re shooting in low light. Your photo will be a lower resolution than normal, but you’ll hopefully be able to see what you’re trying to capture.

Finally, LG has added a QLens image detection tool to the V30S ThinQ. This feature is connected to Amazon and should be able to help you shop for things that you point your phone’s camera at.

If you’ve already got an LG V30 and are frustrated that LG is launching a new version of your device with updated camera features, fret not, because LG says that the AI camera features found on the V30S ThinQ will be offered on existing V30 models via a software update.

Those of you after a whole new smartphone should know that the LG V30S ThinQ will launch in Korea in the coming weeks, with a wider launch happening in March. There’s no word on pricing yet, but we do know that the LG V30S ThinQ will be offered in New Platinum Gray and New Moroccan Blue color options.

LG announces Vision AI, Voice AI features for new V30 model
[ad_1]

Typically when LG’s got a big announcement coming, the company likes to drop tidbits about it in the weeks leading up to the big reveal. It looks like that’s going to be the case again ahead of MWC 2018.

LG plans to launch new smartphone artificial intelligence (AI) technologies at MWC. The first is called Vision AI, which is meant to make a smartphone’s camera smarter. Vision AI analyzes objects that you’re pointing your camera at and recommends the best shooting mode from the eight options available: portrait, food, pet, landscape, city, flower, sunrise, and sunset.

LG explains that its Vision AI analyzes several aspects of an object including angle of view, color, reflections, backlighting and saturation levels. The company developed this technology by analyzing over 100 million images to develop the image recognition algorithms.

Vision AI can can also provide shopping info like the best price on a product or similar products to the one that you’ve scanned. The Vision AI can automatically brighten images in dim environments using a new low-light shooting mode, too.

LG Vision AI features

The other new AI tech coming from LG is Voice AI. LG has worked with Google Assistant to craft 9 new commands to let you perform actions using just your voice. These include taking a panoramic photo, taking a food photo, and performing a shopping search.

LG says that these new features will be included with “the 2018 version of the LG V30.” Some of these AI features will be made available to older smartphones through software updates, too, but LG didn’t elaborate on which models might get which features.

The LG V30 has placed a focus on photography since its launch last year, so it’s no surprise that LG is planning to build on that with new AI technologies for a new version of the V30. We’ll have to wait until MWC before we know everything about this updated V30, but rumors have suggested that it’ll come equipped with AI camera features and more built-in storage.

2018 LG V30, to be unveiled at MWC, will use AI to recommend camera settings and more
[ad_1]

In two weeks, MWC will be open and at one point during the trade show, LG is expected to unveil its revised LG V30 model which is rumored to be called the 2018 LG V30. One of the new features on the device will be software giving the revised phone some AI capabilities. Voice AI will allow the user to give voice commands to Google Assistant that are exclusive to LG handsets. These commands allow the camera to start up in a specific mode.

23 of these commands were introduced last year with another 9 unveiled this year. The latter commands include:

  • Panoramic Photo
  • Food Photo
  • Time-lapse Photo (Video)
  • Slow-motion Video
  • Low-light Photo
  • AI Cam Photo
  • Image Search
  • Code Scanning
  • Shopping Search

Besides using Vision AI image recognition for searches and shopping, LG will use a model based on 100 million images to make recommendations on how to set the camera. The phone will come with 8 pre-defined camera settings to recommend, based on things like reflections in the picture, the angle of the shot, the amount of available light, and more.

As we pointed out, the 2018 LG V30’s AI capabilities will be based on software, not additional hardware. LG plans on offering the AI features to other models that have the hardware to support it. We could hear more about that at MWC.

Amazon will begin designing its own AI chips

Amazon will begin designing its own AI chips
[ad_1]

Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant is about to get a lot better. The retail giant has started designing AI chips that will go into devices powered by Alexa, potentially making interaction with the assistant faster and smoother.

According to The Information, the new AI chip will add speech recognition to Alexa devices. The current process of querying Alexa, even with simple tasks like asking for the time, requires the assistant to offshoot the question to the cloud. This results in a slight delay as it acquires the proper response. The new chip will take on a lot of that responsibility, improving interaction with the assistant significantly.

More complex questioning will still require Alexa to contact the cloud, but simple tasks won’t have to deal with the slight delay anymore.

Amazon’s pivot into making its own chips follows in the footsteps of Apple and Google. The online giant acquired chip designer Annapurna Labs in 2015 with the end goal of eventually making proprietary chips to enhance its services.

Amazon’s Echo line-up would be the first devices to get the new chip, but the report doesn’t state whether Amazon would let third-party companies use the chip.

Amazon Alexa is set to get smarter with custom AI processors

Amazon Alexa is set to get smarter with custom AI processors

Amazon’s sudden move into AI chip development suggests they want to make your conversations with Alexa as delay-free as possible.

As first reported by The Information, Amazon plans to create proprietary AI chips and place them in its Amazon Echo, Amazon Dot, and every other speaker in their lineup. This will allow your new device to handle speech recognition and data processing locally instead of shipping it off to the cloud first.

Right now, whenever you ask Alexa about the weather, she doesn’t know what you’re asking; she just transcribes the words into data and sends that data to the cloud for information. With integrated chip software, Alexa would hear and understand your question – maybe even remember you asking it before – and could look up the forecast without needing to send data to and from Amazon’s remote servers.

With over 400 employees with AI chip expertise, Amazon hopes they’ll be able to improve response time to your questions, as well as improve the quality of responses overall. The Information speculates that these chips could even help prevent your Alexa data from being hacked, and the chip could help Alexa stay functional if Amazon’s cloud ever goes offline.

Shaking up the AI industry

Amazon used to rely on Intel and Nvidia for its processor chips (we called Nvidia an “AI and graphics card titan” last year). Now, with Amazon deciding to strike out on its own for Alexa, Nvidia and Intel might be running out of companies to sell their AI chips to: Google, Apple and Samsung all rely on first-party AI chips for their devices.

Google’s Tensor Processing Unit chips are what power DeepMind, its AI program designed to “learn like a human” by recalling previously learned skills and connections between ideas.

In Amazon’s quest to give Alexa a more “human” response time, these AI chips will likely focus of speech-based connections: linking the words you say to the thing you most likely want answered or purchased, without needing to consult huge amounts of cloud data to infer the answer.

We don’t know how long it will take for Amazon to develop and integrate these chips, but we’re excited about the implications. Voice assistants like Alexa dominated CES this year: dozens of companies integrated their devices into Amazon’s voice-assisted network. If controlling your devices get even faster than before, then a truly “smart” home doesn’t seem too far out of reach.
